The trek to Everest Base Camp is one of the world's great walks. Over about two weeks you climb from the green valleys of the Khumbu to the foot of the highest mountain on Earth, passing Sherpa villages, monasteries and some of the most dramatic scenery anywhere.
How long does it take?
Most itineraries take 12–14 days from Kathmandu, including the flight to Lukla and two acclimatisation days. Faster schedules exist, but they increase the risk of altitude sickness – we always recommend taking the time.
When is the best time to go?
Autumn (late September to November) brings clear skies and stable weather. Spring (March to May) is warmer, with rhododendrons in bloom. Winter is possible but cold, and the monsoon months bring cloud and flight delays.
What permits do I need?
- Sagarmatha National Park entry permit
- Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit
Malung Treks arranges all permits as part of your trek.
How fit do I need to be?
You don't need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable walking 5–7 hours a day, often uphill. Start training 6–8 weeks before your trip with regular hikes, stairs or cardio.
